Yesterday’s win over the Lions was absolutely beautiful. We took another game from a playoff caliber team, in a HEATED Wild Card race. I mean, surrrrre our offense still looks worse than Mark Davis after a fresh haircut, but we continue to win. And whether a win is pretty or ugly, all that matters is that W.
A couple takeaways from Sunday’s win:
Thank God Janoris Jenkins is alive… He took a helmet to the back and at one point – Fox was calling it a “Spine” injury at one point and had him out for the rest of the game. It appears today this injury luckily isn’t like an exploded spleen, or broken back or anything, which is what it first appears to look like. Jenkins is a STUD cornerback for this team, he’s faced some great opponents (Dez, Antonio Brown, AJ Green) and he’s done well with them. I like DRC and Eli Apple, but both of them are human – Jenkins is that next level corner and boy is it great to hear he’s alright.
BRAD FUCKING WING!!! This franchise has been #blessed with punters over the course of the last decade or so and Brad Wing appears to be poised to continue that legacy that Jeff Feagles and Steve Weatherford left for him. Wing had multiple punts (and shout-out to the coverage team here too) where he pinned Detroit back deep several times inside the 5. With a defense like ours, if you pin the opponent deep, we are setting ourselves up for great things. I credit Wing like CRAZY here. Awesome to have him out there.
Odell. Yes, he gets his own paragraph. The debate of whether he should be returning punts will remain flying around there for a while but I heard a nice take on this this weekend (I believe our Producer Tim for In My Face?! came up with this one)… Maybe he just is back there returning punts to get the ball in his hands. Like as long as he holds to ball on a certain number of plays, he’ll feel sufficiently utilized and his head will therefore be screwed on right. Regardless, I heard the “but there’s holding on every punt he returns” rebuttal. Sure. And there’s holding on like every punt anyways. At least when he’s returning it, there’s the small chance it’s for a big gain – maybe a return like yesterday (that got called back). My thought is, between calming down our oft-hysterical Odell and the big game ability – keep catching punts and electrifying my pants. OBJ, you do you.
Lastly, thrilled to have Syracuse GREAT Justin Pugh back on the line. Granted, this doesn’t fix the real problem (*cough cough* Ereck Flowers) but maybe it will give us a boost to a running game that so desperately needed it. The Lions were 11th in the league defensively against the run, and we ran ALRIGHT again them – a feat that we RARELY can say this season.
All in all, beating a 9-4 team felt real good…
