Contrary to what everyone’s opinion is, there 100% is a double standard for the use of the N-word and it is used uncontrollably in sports. Whether it’s in an interview, the game itself, a joke or talking to a friend or family member, it’s used as a nice gesture when it really shouldn’t be. Andre Igoudala used the n-word not once, not twice but three times in a post game interview. He indirectly took a shot at his head coach Steve Kerr stating “the dumb n**ga said to play harder.”
Now, I understand the Warriors are almost in a state of emergency being that they’re only a half game up on the Spurs with less than 20 games left in the season and they’re also without their new golden boy, Kevin Durant, but this gesture is incredibly frustrating.
Steve Kerr can be a psycho on the court sometimes and could rub players the wrong way when he’s court-side and smashing clipboards after you miss an open three, but c’mon Andre. Steve Kerr is a well respected figure in the NBA and you are as well. You’ve had a big name in the league for over a decade and I know jokes are jokes but when you make a statement of that magnitude – it’s not a joke, you’re looking to make a point. The point though remains to be seen.
You are making millions of dollars and I’m a firm believer that where there’s money there’s power, and at the end of the day your money isn’t going to be taken away but that statement was unnecessary. Wealth brings freedom but it also brings responsibility and we live in a time where everything has to be politically correct. To be quite honest, at times it’s very inconvenient in that you can’t always say what you want to say because somebody will get angry but what if someone else said that.
For example, if Matthew Dellavedova said that about Tyronn Lue when the Cavs were down 3-1, it would’ve been anarchy and Delle would’ve gotten his ass beat by more than half of his locker room. Andre is enabling that sort of stuff to happen. There’s a double standard that starts and ends with the N-word being used, and I get this is America where you say whatever the fuck you want and all, but just be smarter.
Don’t give people the opportunity to able to tarnish your reputation just because you’re frustrated with the state of your team. It makes you, your team and your family look awful. Just play the damn game.
