Last week, the idea of covering a professional team as “members of the media” was discussed during one of Frank & my weekly meetings (drinks at our local watering hole).
Frank had let me know that New Jersey’s professional women’s soccer team, the Sky Blue FC, were accepting applications for people like us to become a part of their media. They wanted legitimate commitment however, so we couldn’t just go to some of the home games (of which there were twelve), so we had a decision to make – commit to a season long of covering this soccer team, or not… Well, the deadline was a few days ago. We blew it.
Now, yesterday I was sitting at work thinking to myself, “Damn, I think we missed that deadline… Oh well!” It really could have been a sick opportunity, give us some credibility on the road to becoming serious in this sports reporting/media world, put it on our already outstanding resumes but whatever! We’ll live.
Then, on my drive home from work I see Water Cooler Sports gets an email from someone I didn’t recognize… Now, this is interesting because the only emails WaterCoolerSports12@gmail.com gets are either notifications about the website, or one of our media outlets (Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat or Twitter) letting us know stuff about our accounts or whatever. So, yeah, a random person emailing us caught my eye.
“You are receiving this email as an approval for a 2017 season media credential to cover Sky Blue FC matches this season…”
Wait… What?! Did I black out Friday night? I had genuinely NO CLUE we signed up for this. In fact, I conscientiously thought to myself that it kinda sucked we forgot to get it in by the deadline. And then I get an email we were accepted?
Okay, so I guess we are covering a professional women’s soccer team now!! Peep the fans too… Can you say LIT?!
Oh! And then here’s how the email ended…
“Thanks again, and I will see you on Sunday!”
This Sunday?! THIS SUNDAY?! THIS SUNDAY IS GARY SANCHEZ BOBBLEHEAD DAY AT YANKEES STADIUM!!! I WAS THINKING OF MAYBE, POSSIBLY, EVENTUALLY GETTING TICKETS FOR THAT!! UGH.
Well, there you have it people – life comes at you fast folks. One day you think you are a website that sits back and doesn’t get in the trenches, and the next? You find yourself an esteemed member of the media on the sidelines for an entire Sky Blue FC soccer season – and I for one am ready to absolutely dive heart and soul into this. LET’S GO SKY BLUEEEEE!!!
Sky Blue or F*C* You,
