I get that this site is primarily dedicated to the fucking Yankees*, and apparently the Phillies too, but I’m a Sox fan and forever will be. Needless to say, the last two nights have been stressful for me. In fact, the past two weeks have been stressful for me. Why? Well because the Yankees are on a goddamn tear. But I’m not panicking. I won’t do it. You know why? Because I love this Red Sox team.
I’m not going to throw a bunch of mumbo jumbo jargon and stats at you. This blog isn’t about the numbers, it’s about faith and heart which I have a lot of. As a Red Sox fan living in New York, I’ve had to combat a number of comments from Yankees’ fans. I’ll attack a few of them:
“Oh wow how’s it feel to blow a 7.5 game lead in 20 days (or whatever the hell it was)?”
You know what? It doesn’t feel great! But it felt pretty fucking good starting the season 17-2 so that if the Sox play .500 ball the rest of the season they’ll finish about with about 89/90 wins which should be enough for the playoffs. Now granted I would say if they only won 90 games it might be a bit of an underachievement, but 90 wins is 90 wins.
“Aaron Judge is a better player than Mookie Betts.”
Okay so if you are talking right now then the answer is no. Is Judge a good player? As much as I hate to admit it, yes. But Mookie is playing out of his goddamn mind right now so if you (you, the Yankee fan) are going to (rightfully) blow your load about the Yankees going 17-1 and being white hot right now, then you need to acknowledge that right now, Mookie is the best player in the AL East. I could put the stats out there, but like I said, this isn’t about stats. But for the sake of it, here’s Betts’ season summary to this point:
And here’s Judge’s:
Judge is obviously having a great season, but if we are talking right now? Mookie is better.
“Didi is better than Xander.”
You’re right. Actually Didi is probably the best shortstop that’s ever played for the Yankees.
“Your bullpen is garbage.”
Ugh. Historically speaking the Red Sox bullpen never makes anything fucking easy. Kimbrel is good and he was put in a tough spot last night and if we’re being honest, the Yanks had runners on first and third with one out I knew the goddamn game was over. Yes, Hembree, Kelly, and Barnes are WILDLY inconsistent, and Carson Smith has just not been the guy I was hoping he’d be, BUT Tyler Thornburg is apparently looking very good in rehab. He’s touching 97 and his curveball is disgusting so we have that to look forward to. And hey, it’s not like the Yankees bullpen has been all that and a bag of potato chips.
“David Price is a pussy.”
It’s getting hard for me to defend Price, but I believe in him still. I will always believe in him. I’m loyal to a fault. I have no actual rebuttal to this.
Look, what I’m saying is that it’s May. I’m not saying “it’s May” in saying that these games don’t matter, because they do. I even said it earlier when the Sox went 17-2 to start the season, that sets them up pretty well for the rest of the year, just as this run by the Yankees sets them up really well for the year. I’m saying “it’s May” because a lot can happen. Injuries can happen. Certain guys who haven’t really started hitting yet (ie Stanton and Benintendi) may start hitting. Teams get hot. Teams get cold. Water always finds its level. In the end, both these teams (barring injury) will probably have 90+ wins and both will make the playoffs.
Until then, we need to get the hell out of New York and get to Toronto and beat up on them. But I’m not panicking.
*If this blog has the Yankees tagged to a Yankee blog, I, Ketch did not do that. Tayls did. I would not tag the Yankees in a blog. Guess that means I’m petty, but lucky for me, my family is petty too.
