This is probably a bit of unchartered territory here at Water Cooler Sports but I’m going to attempt to establish yet another arm of our giant company and reach into gaming. Now, I want to be clear here: I am not a gaming expert by any stretch of the imagination. Hell, I’m not even a “gaming guy” per se. But I do enjoy certain video games and I did, in fact, finish in 3rd place my second time ever playing Fortnite at WCS HQ back in April (no big deal). With all of that said, don’t come chirping at me about Skyrim and PUBG and shit like that — I’m literally going to blog video games that I like/think are cool/plan on owning someday.

Alright so with that out of the way, let’s get to the real point of this blog — the Nintendo Switch is the dopest video game console of all time. It came out like a year and a half ago and when I first saw it, I didn’t think much of it and had no desire to get one. Then this past summer, a bunch of my college buddies got them and just kept talking about how awesome it was, the games they were playing, and how big of a loser anyone who didn’t have one was (okay admittingly, that last one was self-imposed). So I actually did a very adult thing and started saving up for one (I highly recommend this “saving up” thing — genius) and two months later, I felt comfortable spending the money.

The system arrived last Tuesday and I was giddy all day at work. I tore into when I got home and it is literally the most simple console setup I’ve ever done — there aren’t an unnecessary amount of cords and its super compact so it takes up virtually no room. I dove into playing Super Mario Odyssey and picked up the controls within like 5 minutes. I’ll be honest, I was worried about the two independent joy-cons and how well I’d be able to do with them but it is surprisingly natural. They also provide a standard controller that you can slide them into if you are resistant to change.

I had played on the TV for probably an hour and a half and then realized I had to make dinner — fuck! But fear not, I just slipped the joy-cons into the little mobile display screen and picked that shit up! That was the first time I was like “ooohhhhhkay yeah I get it now.” The game instantly transferred to the mobile display screen and I just walked downstairs and played while making dinner.

Since then, I’ve been quite obsessed. It is the first thing I do when I get home from work and it’s perfect for chilling in front of the TV, watching sports. You can just plop down on the couch with the mobile console, play, and watch the TV pretty much at the same time. I did it during Thursday Night Football and I was in heaven.

So my message to anyone considering actually getting a Switch is to save up (so #adult) and buy one — it is totally worth it. Plus, with all of the games currently out and coming out shortly, it is going to be even better — Super Smash, Mario Party, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, some pretty cool party game that I played at a friend’s house one time — the possibilities are limitless!
