Yesterday George W. Bush gave his eulogy for HW, a speech that no son wants to ever even think about having to deliver.
Watching the first few (short) videos I saw yesterday, I saw Dubya break down at the end when he said, “HW was the best father a son or daughter could ever ask for“… There were joking clips of him delivering candies to Michelle Obama (evidently a recurring theme at funerals?). And there were even clips of him shaking ALL the presidents and first ladies hands with commentary like, “well… this must be awkward.”
I gotta say, if you haven’t watched THE WHOLE THING yet, please do. Like, right now:
I don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on, the speech really is amazing. Yes, he broke at the end FOR A SECOND, but he delivered it articulately for like 12 straight minutes.
I get choked up just thinking about having to deliver this speech, and W did it wonderfully. Reminds me of a time when presidents were… well, presidential and talked that eloquently.
Yes, this is a sadder post than we usually do, and if you don’t like it, you can fuck right off. But if you’re an American (like I’m sure you are if you’re on this site), I hope you can just appreciate the eulogy for what it is – a really witty, at-times-funny, at-times-heartfelt speech from a son to his father saying goodbye for the last time.
I loved GW then and I love him now.
