PEMDAS, as we all know, stands for Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction was a popular acronym to help us remember the steps to solving multi-step math problems.  In 6th or 7th grade (maybe earlier, I don’t know) you probably learned this with a fun saying like “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or “Penis Erect Means Dicks Are Saucy” to help you remember.  Well what this fun little acronym did was help you, the student remember the order you needed to follow to solve multi-step math problems.

I guess this problem has been circulating on the internet today:

PEMDASAnd of course Twitter has lost their collective mind trying to figure it out.

Hey Quincy, NERD!

Alright so let’s have a quick circle jerk and figure out what the answer is.  Is it 16?  1?  Fuck it we ball?  Well the answer is………..16.

But Ketch, how?  Well kids, start with the parenthesis:

8 / 2(2+2)

8 / 2(4)

Now here’s where the mistake is made.  What a lot of people forget is that Parenthesis comes first and Exponent always comes second.  (Stephen A Smith voice) HOWEVA, Multiplication/Division comes in whatever comes first left to right.  THEN you move to Addition/Subtraction in whatever comes first left to right.  So if you’re going left to right you would have to do 8 divided by 2 first.

8 / 2 = 4

Then finish it off with multiplication.

(4)(4) = 16.
