PEMDAS, as we all know, stands for Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction was a popular acronym to help us remember the steps to solving multi-step math problems. In 6th or 7th grade (maybe earlier, I don’t know) you probably learned this with a fun saying like “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or “Penis Erect Means Dicks Are Saucy” to help you remember. Well what this fun little acronym did was help you, the student remember the order you needed to follow to solve multi-step math problems.
I guess this problem has been circulating on the internet today:
And of course Twitter has lost their collective mind trying to figure it out.
the answer is 1. sorry I don’t make the rules it’s just pemdas pic.twitter.com/wSETxgxlRf

Y’all dumb. It’s 1

Your right it’s 1 idk why people are saying 16 they aren’t starting with the parentheses , then multiplying , THEN dividing

i don’t get why people are saying 16, it’s literally 1 pic.twitter.com/RE2rzgHkds

Or am I just dumb?

I tried putting this equation as a word problem that made sense, and the answer is 1. There are 8 concert tickets to be distributed to 2 families, each consisting of 2 adults and 2 kids. How many tix will each person get?

Hey Quincy, NERD!
its 16 fucking pemdas you plebs go back to math class https://t.co/S4DfYg4ZXP

saying “fuck it we ball” immediately after making a mistake cancels it out simple PEMDAS
— fred (@fredboycolor) July 24, 2019
PEMDAS is a pointless system who's only use is to confuse schoolchildren. No real-world scenario exists where it is required, because the details of the problem will make it clear which operation needs to be performed first. It's just a bunch of nerds having a circle jerk.
— Faraday dá dürr (@JustFaraday) July 29, 2019
Alright so let’s have a quick circle jerk and figure out what the answer is. Is it 16? 1? Fuck it we ball? Well the answer is………..16.
But Ketch, how? Well kids, start with the parenthesis:
8 / 2(2+2)
8 / 2(4)
Now here’s where the mistake is made. What a lot of people forget is that Parenthesis comes first and Exponent always comes second. (Stephen A Smith voice) HOWEVA, Multiplication/Division comes in whatever comes first left to right. THEN you move to Addition/Subtraction in whatever comes first left to right. So if you’re going left to right you would have to do 8 divided by 2 first.
8 / 2 = 4
Then finish it off with multiplication.
(4)(4) = 16.
( . )( . )
