Earlier today I was thinking about the Yankees and how great they are (Ketch already groaned and stopped reading this article)… which, to be honest, is pretty fucking great.
Well, they’re 92-49, the best record in baseball (by a half game to LA) and they’ve done so by suffering more injuries than any team EVER.
So then I start thinking, “Okay, well how many games are left? What do we gotta do to win 100 games? What do we gotta do to win 110 games?”
Well, 100 should be a lock. The Yanks have 21 games left and would need to go 8-13 over that span. To make things even easier, they only have six games against teams above .500 (the Red Sox and the Rays ).
110 would be nuts though. We’d need to go 18-3 to finish the year.
But then I started looking at the rest of those teams at the top of the league.
The Dodgers are a half game behind. Houston is a game back. The Twins and the Braves just 4.5 and 5 back respectively.
Is it actually possible that FIVE teams could finish with over 100 wins?
Well, here’s the minimum that these teams would have to finish in order for them to make hit century mark:
- Yankees: 8-13
- Dodgers: 8-12
- Astros: 9-12
- Twins: 13-9
- Braves: 13-8
Honestly, it’s not even that outlandish to think this could happen…
- Besides five games with the Mets & Rays, the Dodgers have all under .500 teams to finish the year;
- No one except Oakland that the Houston faces from here on out are above .500 clubs;
- The Twins last 13 games alone are all against the White Sox, Tigers and Royals, so there are 13 extremely winnable games;
- And lastly, finally a tough road! The Braves have only one series against a team below .500… So I guess they’d be the “first team out” if this was March Madness.
But now this has got my brain’s got me working… What if (shout-out Creed) this actually happens? What if all five of these teams win over 100 games? Has that ever happened before? FIVE teams over 100 wins!?
Credit to Wikipedia for this, but from what I gather, there’s never even been a year where FOUR teams have won 100+ games. There’s been seven seasons where THREE teams have (1942, 1977, 1998, 2002, 2003 2017 & 2018), but never four.
So is this it? Is 2019 the year where we not only make history but DESTROY it?
Seems likely as shit, and honestly, I’m rooting for it.
Let’s make history happen. Let’s break records and MAKE BASEBALL GREAT AGAIN!!
(WORTH NOTING THAT I WROTE THIS POST YESTERDAY AND THREE OF THE FIVE TEAMS I WAS TALKING ABOUT HERE WON, MAKING THIS ALL THE MORE LIKELY)
